Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy ships with five difficulty presets on the pause menu plus a separate Invincible Mode toggle that you can stack on top of any preset. You can switch presets mid-run and the new balance applies immediately, and you can flip Invincible Mode on or off at any time without reloading. This page is the ruleset: what each preset changes, what Invincible Mode does on top, and which combination a trophy run should use. Combat has its own how-to on the combat guide. Trophy math sits on the trophies page. The accessibility page covers the sub-sliders that further tune combat on the accessibility page.\n\n## What the pause menu actually shows\n\nFive named presets sit on the title screen and in the pause menu. They run from least to most punishing:\n\n- Narrative — the lowest challenge preset. Enemies deal reduced damage, parry windows are at their widest, and the Creature chases are the slowest of the five. Puzzles keep their default timer but most timing challenges are reduced. The game still asks you to engage with combat verbs (parry, dodge, kick, sphere); it does not auto-resolve encounters.\n- Easy — the developer-curated gentle preset. Parry windows are wider than Normal, enemy aggression is reduced, and mixed packs show their first yellow parry attacks later in the campaign. Resonance Points and collectible counts are identical to every other preset.\n- Normal — the launch default. Parry timing matches the in-game tutorial, stagger windows follow the developer-intended pace, mixed packs include the first yellow attacks in Chapter 4. Trophy runs and first playthroughs default here.\n- Hard — incoming damage is up roughly 30 percent versus Normal, parry frames tighten, and enemy aggression (attack frequency and tracking-while-dodging) increases. Mixed-pack yellow attacks show up earlier (Chapter 3 instead of Chapter 4).\n- Nightmare — the highest preset. Hard numbers plus reduced healing from the meditation pickups, and the Creature has fewer grace frames during chase sequences. Enemies in late-chapter encounters (Chapter 11 Minotaur arena, Chapter 12 quarry) hit noticeably harder.\n\n## Invincible Mode is a separate toggle\n\nInvincible Mode is not a sixth preset. It is an independent toggle in the gameplay settings that you can layer on top of Narrative, Easy, Normal, Hard, or Nightmare. With Invincible Mode on, Sophia cannot die from incoming damage. Status effects (stagger, knockback, being grabbed by a Corrupted) still apply, and the QTE button-mash sequences to break free from grabs still require input. Falling into a kill volume still kills; the toggle is combat invulnerability, not total no-fail.\n\nInvincible Mode is intended for players who want the Minoan story and the parry-and-dodge combat feedback without the punishment layer. It does not gate any achievement. It does not change Resonance Point math, charm proc chances, blade techniques, or artefact locations.\n\n## What does not change with difficulty or Invincible Mode\n\n- 200 Resonance Points in the world and the Like a Warrior 165 threshold.\n- Charm, blade, and artefact totals.\n- Trophies, achievements, and the Platinum rule on PlayStation.\n- The dual-timeline chapter beats and ending variant.\n- The grapple, aerial, and height-kill interactions.\n- Invincible Mode’s off / on state is preserved on a per-save basis across launches.\n\nThis is why players who bounced off the first melee combat tutorial do not need a trophy re-route. Drop preset to Narrative for that room, raise it back to Normal for the trophy run. The 165-point math is identical.\n\n## Per-preset recommendation\n\nNarrative. Recommended if you bounced off the first rooftop melee in Chapter 2, want the Macula story without the parry loop, or play with kids in the room and want to control violence. Combine with accessibility options for a comfortable narrative run.\n\nEasy. Recommended for first playthroughs that want trophies on the same save but a friendlier first three chapters. Mixed-pack yellow attacks still appear, just later.\n\nNormal. The launch default and the recommended preset for any first playthrough that wants trophies on the same save. Mixed-pack yellow attacks in Chapter 4 are fair challenge, not a brick wall.\n\nHard. Recommended for second playthroughs where you already know parry timing and want Mastery nodes to actually matter. Bestiary behaviour does not change; only the numbers behind it do.\n\nNightmare. Recommended only for experienced players who want every late-chapter encounter to require mastery of Echo’s Return, the focus burst, and the timing windows. Trophy-wise this preset does not unlock anything additional; Like a Warrior works the same.\n\nInvincible Mode. Stack it on any of the five presets if you want the combat verbs to remain expressive but the punishment layer to disappear. Useful for photo-mode runs, accessibility-first runs, and any player who wants the dual-timeline story without the parry loop.\n\n## When to swap preset mid-campaign\n\n- If a yellow-attack pack in Chapter 7 or 9 stops being fun, drop from Hard to Normal for that chapter and raise it back at the checkpoint.\n- If a Creature chase in Chapter 9 spikes your difficulty above Nightmare, drop to Hard until you pass the lantern sequence. The trophy does not care.\n- If Normal is fine until Chapter 11 and Chapter 12 feels unfair, swap to Easy for the Minotaur finale and finish it. The ending does not change.\n- If you want the Chapter 12 finale for story but not the parry timing, flip Invincible Mode on for that chapter only.\n\n## Accessibility overlaid on difficulty\n\nThe accessibility menu can lower combat difficulty further, independent of the preset. Reduce-timed-prompts, camera comfort, and one-handed rebinds all stack on top of Narrative mode. Subtitles and colour alternatives do not touch combat. The combination of Narrative + reduced timed prompts + Invincible Mode is, in practice, the closest preset to a Walking-Sim experience without turning the game into a cinematic mod. Details live on the accessibility page.\n\n## Trophy, achievement, and Platinum behaviour\n\nNo trophy or achievement in Resonance is locked to a specific preset. Like a Warrior counts Resonance Points regardless of difficulty, and Invincible Mode does not affect the count. The rarest Steam achievement, based on global statistics, is baitfish (lure 20 Petrified while the Creature hunts, on any preset), and that achievement is harder on Narrative because Petrified activate over a wider radius.\n\nPlayStation Platinum is achievable on every preset, with or without Invincible Mode. The five hidden trophies (A New Beginning, Overboard, Refraction, Baitfish, Close Call) are checks on what you did, not how hard you set the game.\n\n## Common mistakes\n\n- Treating Narrative as a tutorial then bouncing off Normal trophy math: the math is identical.\n- Switching from Hard to Nightmare in Chapter 8 expecting trophies to change: they do not.\n- Saving Nightmare only for trophies: Nightmare saves you nothing extra, and the reduced-healing rule can stall your point run if you die at the wrong moment.\n- Avoiding Normal because you bounced off melee and switching straight to Nightmare: Normal is the default and a fair benchmark.\n- Forgetting that Invincible Mode is layered, not a sixth preset. The preset and the toggle are independent settings.\n\nIf you finish the campaign on Normal and feel nothing, replay one chapter on Hard. If you finish on Nightmare, replay one chapter on Narrative and notice how generous the parry frames are. That gap is the design space the difficulty menu exposes.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does difficulty affect Like a Warrior?

No. The 165 of 200 Resonance Points threshold is identical on every preset, and Invincible Mode does not change the count. Death counts against you on any difficulty; checkpoints reset the room's tokens on any difficulty.

Which difficulty is best for the Platinum?

Normal. It matches the trophy pacing and avoids Nightmare's reduced-healing rule. Narrative will platinum too, just with fewer combat punishments. Invincible Mode does not affect trophy eligibility.

Can I switch preset mid-campaign?

Yes. The pause menu has the difficulty selector. Changes take effect immediately. No reload required.

Does Invincible Mode disable trophies?

No. Invincible Mode is a per-save toggle that does not gate any achievement or trophy. It only prevents Sophia from dying from incoming damage.

What is the difference between Hard and Nightmare?

Nightmare adds reduced healing from meditation pickups and fewer Creature chase grace frames. The damage and aggression numbers are the same as Hard.

Will trophies appear if I change difficulty mid-run?

Yes. Trophies do not track the preset you played on or whether Invincible Mode was on. The only preset-affecting achievement is baitfish, and that one is harder on Narrative than on Normal because Petrified activate over a wider radius.
