Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Crossplay and Multiplayer

Single-player across PS5, Xbox Series, and PC — with no co-op or PvP anywhere in the box.

Crossplay and Multiplayer

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a single-player only cinematic action game. The campaign does not ship with online co-op, couch co-op, asynchronous multiplayer, PvP, leaderboards, or any form of drop-in play. The companions you meet in the story — Leni, Faro, Irene, Alec, Ezra, Valerio — are scripted NPCs that Sophia fights alongside in cinematic encounters. There is no second controller slot, no online lobby, and no matchmaking anywhere in the box. IGN’s launch coverage, the official Microsoft Store description, and Focus Entertainment’s press kit all confirm this is the case at launch.

This page is a short, definitive answer to the most common launch-week search: “Is Resonance crossplay?”. The answer is that the question does not really apply. There is no multiplayer to play with friends across platforms. Cross-platform progression between PC and console is a different question (and yes, it is partially supported via Xbox Play Anywhere on Microsoft Store titles — but Steam Cloud is a separate pipe). The detailed cloud-save / cross-progression rules live on the cloud saves page.

If you are looking for a Plague Tale game with multiplayer, A Plague Tale: Requiem shipped with a single-player campaign only. A Plague Tale: Innocence shipped with a single-player campaign only. There is no Plague Tale spinoff in this franchise with multiplayer at launch. Search engine answers that pair “Plague Tale multiplayer” with “Resonance” are usually for an unrelated game.

What “crossplay” could mean in this game’s context

People search for crossplay for two distinct reasons. The two mean different things for Resonance:

  1. Online co-op or PvP with friends on other platforms. Not supported. The campaign has no multiplayer layer.
  2. Buying the game on one platform and playing on another. Partially supported via Xbox Play Anywhere on the Microsoft Store build. Steam and Epic saves do not transfer to Xbox, and vice versa. Sony does not participate in Play Anywhere. Detailed rules on the cloud saves page.

If you are searching because you want to play with your friend who owns the game on a different console, the only path is the friend buys the game on the same platform you own. There is no shared world, no shared lobby, no shared progress.

What is supported across platforms

The campaign, achievements, and trophies behave the same way on every platform. There is no content locked to one storefront. The platform-specific differences are limited to:

  • Frame rate and resolution. PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC offer multiple modes (Quality, Performance, Ray Tracing where supported). The mode tables live on the performance page.
  • HDR presets. Three HDR presets (SDR-equivalent, HDR1000, HDR400) live in the Video submenu on every platform with HDR support.
  • Controller remap. Full button remapping on every platform; the same constraints (parry cannot share a binding with interact; kick cannot share a binding with jump).
  • Cloud saves. Steam Cloud is a separate pipe from Epic Games Store is a separate pipe from Microsoft Store is a separate pipe from PlayStation Plus is a separate pipe from Xbox Cloud. Within Xbox and Microsoft Store, Xbox Play Anywhere shares saves. The cloud saves page has the matrix.
  • DLC ownership. The Heritage Pack is sold separately on each storefront. Owning it on Steam does not unlock it on Xbox or PlayStation. If you switch platforms, you have to repurchase the DLC.

There is no cross-platform progression, no cross-platform currency, no cross-platform achievement sync, no cross-platform friends list. Steam, Epic, Microsoft, and Sony are walled gardens by design.

Why single-player only

Asobo Studio’s design intent on the Zouna engine is a single-player cinematic experience. The engine that powered Microsoft Flight Simulator and A Plague Tale: Requiem is built around a single controllable player and a partner NPC. The dual-timeline sequences that hand off between Sophia and Ariadne are scripted — both characters are controlled by Sophia’s input, with the engine switching which body you inhabit. There is no scenario where a second player joins either body. The Petrified chase sequences, the Creature escapes, the Verona heist, the temple of light, all are designed as one-player set pieces.

The launch developer interview on August 25, 2026 (gamescom Opening Night Live) confirmed the single-player only framing. The 37-trophy list and 36-achievement list are entirely single-player. There is no trophy that requires co-op.

What the game offers instead

If you are looking for replayability, the game ships with:

  • Chapter select after credits. Walk any of the 14 chapters from the menu. Use this for trophy mop-up. The chapter select menu preserves your collectible counter.
  • New Game Plus. A second playthrough with adjusted difficulty and Resonance Point carryover. Details on the new game plus page.
  • Photo Mode. Asobo’s day-one camera tool with sliders for depth of field, exposure, and framing. The dual-timeline framing trick lives on the photo mode page.
  • Five difficulty presets plus Invincible Mode. Five presets (Narrative, Easy, Normal, Hard, Nightmare) plus a separate Invincible Mode toggle that you can layer on top. The full rules live on the difficulty page.
  • Accessibility settings. Subtitles, color alternatives, camera comfort, button remapping, and the HDR mid-point slider. Full list on the accessibility page.

None of these features involve a second player. The single-player framing is a design choice, not a missing feature.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • “Crossplay” with a friend on another console — there is no such mode. The campaign is single-player.
  • “Cross-progression” from PC save to PS5 save — not supported. Each platform has its own save file.
  • “Carry-over” from a Steam save to an Xbox Play Anywhere save — supported only on the Microsoft Store / Xbox side, not between Steam and Xbox.
  • “Co-op campaign mode” — there is no co-op campaign mode. There is no online, no couch, no drop-in.
  • “Multiplayer achievements” — there are no multiplayer achievements. All 36 achievements and 37 trophies are single-player.
  • “Plague Tale multiplayer mode” — there is no Plague Tale multiplayer mode in any game in the franchise at launch.

If you see a search result, Reddit thread, or YouTube video claiming Resonance has any form of multiplayer or crossplay, it is wrong, outdated, or about a different game. The Asobo Studio and Focus Entertainment press kit for the August 27, 2026 launch is the canonical source.

Can I play with a friend who owns the game on a different console?

No. There is no multiplayer at all. Your friend would have to buy the game on the same platform you own it on for any interaction at all. There is no shared lobby, no shared world, no cross-platform progression.

Does Resonance have co-op campaign mode?

No. The campaign is single-player only. There is no co-op, no drop-in, no asynchronous multiplayer. The companions in the story (Leni, Faro, Irene, Alec, Ezra, Valerio) are scripted NPCs.

Are there any multiplayer achievements?

No. All 36 Steam achievements and 37 PS5 trophies are single-player. There is no achievement that requires a second player. The trophy list is on the trophies page.

Can I transfer my save from Steam to PlayStation?

No. Steam Cloud saves do not transfer to PlayStation Plus saves or vice versa. Each platform has its own save file. The only cross-platform save transfer supported at launch is Xbox Play Anywhere between the Microsoft Store and Xbox console.

Is there a Plague Tale game with multiplayer?

No. A Plague Tale: Innocence, A Plague Tale: Requiem, and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy all shipped with single-player campaigns only. There is no Plague Tale spinoff with multiplayer at launch.

Will a future update add multiplayer?

There is no announced update that adds multiplayer. The Asobo Studio and Focus Entertainment press kit for the August 27, 2026 launch frames the game as a single-player cinematic experience. If a multiplayer mode is announced, it will be a new page, not a silent edit to this one.
