Crafting and Alchemy Guide

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy shifts the series away from rat-focused alchemy toward light manipulation and combat utility crafting. Sophia’s alchemy pouch holds three consumable types — Solar-Pitch Jars, Umbra-Smoke, and Lumen-Cores — each with distinct combat and puzzle applications. This page covers material sources, crafting costs, upgrade priorities, and the dual-timeline farming logic that determines whether you have enough Sulfur for the Chapter 9 arena.

What crafting actually is in Resonance

Unlike Requiem’s rat-focused chemistry, Resonance’s crafting is a dual-purpose system serving both combat utility and light-trial puzzles. The alchemy pouch is separate from the weapon upgrade system — blades do not require crafting materials, only discoverable perks from hero graves. Materials drop from enemies, found in environment containers, and purchased in limited quantities from the one shop NPC on the island.

The three craftable items:

Solar-Pitch Jars — thrown blinding area-effect consumable. Creates a 5-metre flash that stuns enemies for 4 seconds. Primary use: grouped combat encounters, archer suppression, and emergency disengagement. Craft cost: 2 Sulfur + 1 Pitch.

Umbra-Smoke — deployed smoke cloud that breaks enemy lock-on. Enemies inside cannot target Sophia; she can reposition or chain stealth takedowns. Primary use: escaped pursuits, archer corridors, and reviving after a lethal hit. Craft cost: 2 Alcohol + 1 Dust.

Lumen-Cores — puzzle-critical light-reflecting items for ancient Minoan machinery. Not a combat item. Required to activate mirrors and light-beam puzzles in the Theseus timeline. Craft cost: 2 Minoan Quartz + 1 Medieval Phosphorus.

Material sources and farming

Materials come from three sources: enemy drops, world containers, and one merchant NPC. There is no infinite farm loop — materials are finite per playthrough.

Sulfur — enemies drop 1–3 per killed soldier. Most abundant in Chapters 5–7 and 10–11 where soldier density is highest. Chapter 5 alone yields 15–20 Sulfur if you clear every patrol. Do not waste Solar-Pitch on basic guards; reserve jars for the Chapter 9 cave arena and the final temple.

Alcohol — world containers (amphora, barrel) in Venice chapters (1–2) and temple areas (11–13). Not enemy-dropped. Search every breakable container in Chapter 2’s market area for 8–12 Alcohol before you need Umbra-Smoke in Chapter 4.

Pitch — Minoan-era containers in cave and tomb areas. Chapters 4, 6, and 7 are the primary sources. One full chest in the Chapter 7 sealed-tomb area yields 6–8 Pitch.

Dust — enemy drops from spectral and shadow enemies in the Theseus timeline. Chapters 6 and 10 have the highest spectral density. Save Umbra-Smoke for pursuit sections; Dust is the gating material.

Minoan Quartz — Minoan-era node gathering in cave and tomb areas. Chapter 4 pillar-chamber and Chapter 6 underground sections have nodes that respawn on chapter select reload. Required exclusively for Lumen-Cores; do not waste on combat items.

Medieval Phosphorus — world containers in the 1334 timeline. Chapter 3 dock area and Chapter 5 camp areas yield 6–10 per run. Gating material for Lumen-Cores alongside Minoan Quartz.

Dual-timeline farming logic

The island’s dual-time structure means material types cluster by era. Minoan Quartz and Pitch appear only in the ancient timeline; Sulfur and Medieval Phosphorus appear only in 1334. This design means you cannot farm one resource type in both eras.

The practical consequence: if you run out of Sulfur in Chapter 9, you cannot backtrack to an earlier Minoan section to find more. Chapter select restores containers but not enemy-dropped materials. Plan your Solar-Pitch expenditure before Chapter 5.

The exception is Minoan Quartz: nodes in sealed areas respawn on chapter select even though they appear in a fixed state on first visit. If you missed the Chapter 4 pillar-chamber Lumen-Cores, chapter-select reload restores them.

Pouch upgrade priorities

The alchemy pouch holds a maximum of each item type; the default cap is 3 per type. Three upgrade tiers exist:

UpgradeMaterialsEffectPriority
Pouch Expansion I15 Sulfur, 10 LeatherCap: 3 → 6 Solar-Pitch and Umbra-SmokeHigh
Pouch Expansion II20 Sulfur, 15 LeatherCap: 6 → 9Medium
Lumen-Core Efficiency10 Minoan Quartz, 10 SaltpeterLumen-Core cost reduced by 50%Medium

The first pouch upgrade is the highest priority because it doubles your emergency combat consumables before the hardest middle chapters. Lumen-Core Efficiency is lower priority because the puzzles requiring it are more spread out and forgiving of slow solving.

Common mistakes

Using Lumen-Cores on enemies. Minoan Quartz is the rarest material in the game. Using it for anything except light puzzles is a resource trap. Save every Quartz for the Chapter 4 mirror puzzle, the Chapter 7 beam-reflection sequence, and the Chapter 10 rotating-gem door.

Hoarding Umbra-Smoke. Players who save all Umbra-Smoke for the final boss run out of Dust in Chapter 12 and have no disengage option against the final pursuit. Spend Umbra-Smoke in Chapter 9 and Chapter 11 pursuits rather than saving.

Not searching Chapter 2 market. The Venice market area has 8–12 Alcohol in breakable containers. Skipping it creates an Alcohol shortage in Chapter 4 that gates Umbra-Smoke entirely.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I farm materials infinitely?

No. Materials are finite per playthrough. Chapter select restores world containers but not enemy drops. Plan your crafting expenditure before Chapter 5.

What is the rarest crafting material?

Minoan Quartz. It appears only in Minoan-era caves and tombs, and it is required exclusively for Lumen-Cores. Hoard it for the mirror and beam puzzles.

Should I upgrade the alchemy pouch?

Yes, Pouch Expansion I is the highest priority upgrade. It doubles your Solar-Pitch and Umbra-Smoke capacity before the hardest middle chapters.

Can I use Lumen-Cores in combat?

No. Lumen-Cores are puzzle-only items. Using Minoan Quartz on anything except light puzzles is a resource trap.

Where is the best place to farm Sulfur?

Chapters 5 through 7 and 10–11 have the highest soldier density. Chapter 5 alone yields 15–20 Sulfur if you clear all patrols.
